This cave is also associated with the verbal legend of the ancients. The tale tells that after defeating the enemy, Thanh Giong rode back to heaven, leaving the people with a precious horse and sword to ward off evil spirits and reassure people's hearts. The Surprise Cave is the place where Thanh Giong’s horse's footsteps are left (Thanh Giong is a hero in Vietnamese legend), and the vestiges of the old battle have become small lakes and lakes surrounded by large rocks.
This cave was found by French explorers in 1901. Upon arriving here, they were overwhelmed by the beauty and grandeur of the cave, so they took the "La Grotte des Surprises'' (Cave of awe) to name. However, it took 40 years after (in 1993) that this cave welcomed the first visitors. Since then, this cave has always been in the top 10 of the most popular caves in HaLong Bay, even the cave was voted one of the 7 most beautiful caves in Vietnam by CNN Travel magazine.

After arriving at Bo Hon Island, visitors will experience the feeling of great relaxation and excitement as you follow the rocky steps, twisting, and threading under the green forest canopy to reach the mouth of the cave. After climbing about 50 stone steps and going down 10 steps, you will arrive. This cave is 25m above sea level, overlooking the sea, hidden under luxuriant leaves that are hard to find. The mouth of the cave is quite narrow, you need to maneuver to get in, but once you get there, you will be overwhelmed by the grandeur inside the cave. The cave has the largest area in the caves of HaLong Bay, up to 12,200m2, divided into 2 main compartments with thousands of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.

The first compartment is 300m2 wide like a giant theater. Visitors entering the cave will be impressed by the falling stalactites like a beautiful "velvet carpet" that nature bestows on the cave ceiling or is delighted by the elephant, seals, and raspberry mammals, etc nicely shaped. Not only that, the perfect combination of lights and stalactites will make visitors feel lost in a virtual world.
The deeper you get into the cave, the more tourists the mystical beauty of Sung Sot Cave in HaLong Bay can overcome.  To get to the second compartment, you will need to follow a small path, just enough for one adult. But when you arrive, there will be a different scene with a large cave bed up to 600m2. Right next to the entrance, you can instantly see a horse-shaped rock, a long sword, and small lakes and pond-images associated with the old Thanh Giong tale. Going to the top of the cave, visitors will see a "beautiful garden" recreated by mother nature with lakes, trees, birds and other animals living together. . When going to the end of the cave, one can admire the huge, huge rocks - the traces of nature left after the aftershocks. It is no exaggeration to say that Mother Nature has deeply loved HaLong when giving such wonderful scenery to this place.

“Yes. Sung Sot Cave Vietnam was a Surprising cave as it surprised us with rock formation and stalactites, stalactites. Best cave I have ever seen.” - Julia A
However, at present, there are also many conflicting opinions about this due to the increasing number of visitors and overload:
“Not sure if we were unlucky but stopped off here on our cruise with a million other cruises (not sure why they don’t stagger them) the cave itself was impressive I am sure but surrounded by 100s of tourists being herded through walkways like sheep it is hard to enjoy.” - Gem
“Potential to be stunning if only there were fewer tourists. A problem easily remedied by staggering the amount of tourist they let in in one go.”- Nadia Markus.
Because of its popularity, Sung Sot Grotto cave is increasingly overloaded by the number of tourists flocking, even a few acts of lack of awareness destroying the environmental landscape, causing a lot of objection. But why because of those few should we miss out on this beautiful cave experience, right?
